Accommodation Options for Degree Apprentices

Starting a degree apprenticeship is an exciting milestone and comes with a load of benefits, including the chance to earn, learn and gain valuable experience while building your independence along the way.

Like when starting univeristy, some students who choose a degree apprenticeship want to live closer to their workplace and univeristy campus to spend less time commuting, more time studying and have the change to build a new social life.

With different accommodation options available for degree apprentices, including student accommodation and private accommodation, you’ll need to find a place that meets your needs.

This blog has everything you'll need to know, so read on to learn more!

Student Accommodation Options for Apprentices

As a degree apprentice, you can experience some of the benefits, like Council Tax exemption. You are also able to stay in student accommodation, putting you in some of the most ideal locations during your life as an apprentice.

Option 1) Student Apprenticeship Accommodation

Student accommodation can provide you with a supportive environment surrounded by other like-minded univeristy students. Many student accommodation providers are now offering spaces specifically tailored for apprentices who need housing that accommodates their schedules.

Option 2) Private Apprenticeship Accommodation

Private accommodation is another great option, giving you more independence and flexibility. Private accommodation can be found in popular student areas, though it's typically located further away from university campuses.

You might find this option more appealing if you prefer living in a quieter setting or want a space tailored to your specific needs.

Factors to Consider as an Apprentice

When deciding on accommodation as an apprentice, there are different factors to consider to ensure you’re making an informed decision. These include:

  • Accommodation costs
  • Accommodation location and your preferences
  • Nearby transportation options
  • Council tax

Accommodation Costs

When it comes to accommodation costs for students and apprentices, location matters and can directly influence your living expenses.

When thinking about your options, keep in mind that accommodation for apprentices in London will be considerably more than accommodation for apprentices outside of London.

Accommodation Location

You’ll also want to ensure that the location that you decide to live in as a degree apprentice ticks the majority (if not all) of your lifestyle preferences. This will not only improve your quality of life as an apprentice, but it can also improve your overall happiness

To help you decide if an accommodation location will suit your lifestyle preferences as an apprentice, ask yourself the following question:

  • Is the area well-connected with public transport?
  • Do you have an easy commute to and from work and the university campus?
  • Are there any local banks, ATM machine, supermarkets, gyms and chemists nearby?
  • Do you have a local GP or health centre nearby?
  • Is the area sociable or quiet - and which do I want?

Nearby Transportation Options

Having reliable transportation options around your place of residence can make a huge difference to your experience as an apprentice.

You should make sure that buses, trains, or other public transport services align with your work and study schedule. Additionally, check if discounted travel passes are available to help reduce commuting expenses.

Council Tax

As a degree apprentice, you may need to factor Council Tax into your expenses. Unlike full-time university students who are typically exempt, degree apprentices may be required to pay Council Tax depending on their circumstances.

Financial Support for Degree Apprentices

During the first year of your apprenticeship, you should expect to be on the apprenticeship minimum wage (at least), which is £6.40 per hour

Though you are studying, you’ll still have to pay Income Tax on any annual earnings over £12,570 as well as National Insurance contributions if you’re earning over £190 per week

This may sound scary, especially if your living costs are high, but don’t worry, as there is funding and finance available for degree apprenticeships. Some of these include:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Apprentices Get Student Accommodation?

Absolutely! There are various student accommodation options for apprentices, including student accommodation and private accommodation. Student accommodation can be a great way for you to meet new people and better manage your finances.

Are Degree Apprentices Classed as Students?

Yes, degree apprentices are employed during their time as students in university and at work, which allows them to complete a full Bachelor's or Master's degree.

While it may take longer to complete, apprentices will graduate with practical work experience in their chosen field, making them well-equipped for the workplace.

Can Apprentices Get Any Financial Support?

Yes, full-time apprentices can receive financial help due to a typically lower-than-usual salary. If you’re pursuing an apprenticeship, speak to your employer to check if you qualify for benefits, such as tax exemption.

Can Degree Apprentices Live In Student Accommodation

Yes, living in student accommodation with other full-time university students may still be a possibility if you're pursuing a degree apprenticeship, though it depends on the provider.

However, it's important to keep in mind that degree apprenticeships can include a lot more contact hours than regular university courses, and you could also have to pay council tax.
